Turin Median Collector

Italy

Nicknamed the “idropolitana”, the Turin Central Sewer will form the new backbone of Turin’s sewerage network, running alongside the existing one. It will extend for 14 km beneath the city at a depth of 20 metres, connecting the southern part of Turin, at the border with Moncalieri, to the city’s north-western area and directing wastewater flows
to the Castiglione Torinese sewage treatment plant. The new infrastructure will help address challenges associated with climate change, including the significant increase in combined wastewater and stormwater flows that the
existing collector is no longer able to cope with.  It will also enable major maintenance works to be carried out on the existing system while making an important contribution to environmental protection. The collector will convey combined wastewater and first-flush stormwater — often containing pollutants such as hydrocarbons and mineral oils — to SMAT’s treatment plant in Castiglione Torinese. This will reduce pollutant concentrations in wastewater and limit overflows into the River Po and throughout the wider area served by the network. The project will also include remediation works related to the presence of unexploded Second World War ordnance, as well as environmental
enhancement measures.  For every shrub removed to facilitate construction along the collector route, a new tree will be planted.

Benefits

1. Increased capacity of the sewerage network.
2. Adaptation to climate change.
3. Reduction in pollutant concentrations in wastewater.
4. Reduction in wastewater overflows into the River Po.
